8fa7292fee treewide: Switch/rename to timer_delete[_sync]()
timer_delete[_sync]() replaces del_timer[_sync](). Convert the whole tree
over and remove the historical wrapper inlines.

Conversion was done with coccinelle plus manual fixups where necessary.

   Bizjak uses x86 named address space qualifiers to provide

   This has caused a small amount of fallout - two or three issues were
   reported. In all cases the calling code was found to be incorrect.

 - The series "Some cleanup for memcg" from Chen Ridong implements some
   relatively monir cleanups for the memcontrol code.

 - The series "mm: fixes for device-exclusive entries (hmm)" from David
   Hildenbrand fixes a boatload of issues which David found then using
   device-exclusive PTE entries when THP is enabled. More work is
   needed, but this makes thins better - our own HMM selftests now
   succeed.

 - The series "mm: zswap: remove z3fold and zbud" from Yosry Ahmed
   remove the z3fold and zbud implementations. They have been deprecated
   for half a year and nobody has complained.

 - The series "mm: further simplify VMA merge operation" from Lorenzo
   Stoakes implements numerous simplifications in this area. No runtime
   effects are anticipated.

 - The series "mm/madvise: remove redundant mmap_lock operations from
   process_madvise()" from SeongJae Park rationalizes the locking in the
   madvise() implementation. Performance gains of 20-25% were observed
   in one MADV_DONTNEED microbenchmark.

 - The series "Tiny cleanup and improvements about SWAP code" from
   Baoquan He contains a number of touchups to issues which Baoquan
   noticed when working on the swap code.

 - The series "mm: kmemleak: Usability improvements" from Catalin
   Marinas implements a couple of improvements to the kmemleak
   user-visible output.

 - The series "mm/damon/paddr: fix large folios access and schemes
   handling" from Usama Arif provides a couple of fixes for DAMON's
   handling of large folios.

 - The series "mm/damon/core: fix wrong and/or useless damos_walk()
   behaviors" from SeongJae Park fixes a few issues with the accuracy of
   kdamond's walking of DAMON regions.

 - The series "expose mapping wrprotect, fix fb_defio use" from Lorenzo
   Stoakes changes the interaction between framebuffer deferred-io and
   core MM. No functional changes are anticipated - this is preparatory
   work for the future removal of page structure fields.

 - The series "mm/damon: add support for hugepage_size DAMOS filter"
   from Usama Arif adds a DAMOS filter which permits the filtering by
   huge page sizes.

 - The series "mm: permit guard regions for file-backed/shmem mappings"
   from Lorenzo Stoakes extends the guard region feature from its
   present "anon mappings only" state. The feature now covers shmem and
   file-backed mappings.

 - The series "mm: batched unmap lazyfree large folios during
   reclamation" from Barry Song cleans up and speeds up the unmapping
   for pte-mapped large folios.

 - The series "reimplement per-vma lock as a refcount" from Suren
   Baghdasaryan puts the vm_lock back into the vma. Our reasons for
   pulling it out were largely bogus and that change made the code more
   messy. This patchset provides small (0-10%) improvements on one
   microbenchmark.

 - The series "Docs/mm/damon: misc DAMOS filters documentation fixes and
   improves" from SeongJae Park does some maintenance work on the DAMON
   docs.

 - The series "hugetlb/CMA improvements for large systems" from Frank
   van der Linden addresses a pile of issues which have been observed
   when using CMA on large machines.

 - The series "mm/damon: introduce DAMOS filter type for unmapped pages"
   from SeongJae Park enables users of DMAON/DAMOS to filter my the
   page's mapped/unmapped status.

 - The series "zsmalloc/zram: there be preemption" from Sergey
   Senozhatsky teaches zram to run its compression and decompression
   operations preemptibly.

 - The series "selftests/mm: Some cleanups from trying to run them" from
   Brendan Jackman fixes a pile of unrelated issues which Brendan
   encountered while runnimg our selftests.

 - The series "fs/proc/task_mmu: add guard region bit to pagemap" from
   Lorenzo Stoakes permits userspace to use /proc/pid/pagemap to
   determine whether a particular page is a guard page.

 - The series "mm, swap: remove swap slot cache" from Kairui Song
   removes the swap slot cache from the allocation path - it simply
   wasn't being effective.

 - The series "mm: cleanups for device-exclusive entries (hmm)" from
   David Hildenbrand implements a number of unrelated cleanups in this
   code.

 - The series "mm: Rework generic PTDUMP configs" from Anshuman Khandual
   implements a number of preparatoty cleanups to the GENERIC_PTDUMP
   Kconfig logic.

 - The series "mm/damon: auto-tune aggregation interval" from SeongJae
   Park implements a feedback-driven automatic tuning feature for
   DAMON's aggregation interval tuning.

 - The series "Fix lazy mmu mode" from Ryan Roberts fixes some issues in
   powerpc, sparc and x86 lazy MMU implementations. Ryan did this in
   preparation for implementing lazy mmu mode for arm64 to optimize
   vmalloc.

 - The series "mm/page_alloc: Some clarifications for migratetype
   fallback" from Brendan Jackman reworks some commentary to make the
   code easier to follow.

 - The series "page_counter cleanup and size reduction" from Shakeel
   Butt cleans up the page_counter code and fixes a size increase which
   we accidentally added late last year.

 - The series "Add a command line option that enables control of how
   many threads should be used to allocate huge pages" from Thomas
   Prescher does that. It allows the careful operator to significantly
   reduce boot time by tuning the parallalization of huge page
   initialization.

 - The series "Fix calculations in trace_balance_dirty_pages() for cgwb"
   from Tang Yizhou fixes the tracing output from the dirty page
   balancing code.

 - The series "mm/damon: make allow filters after reject filters useful
   and intuitive" from SeongJae Park improves the handling of allow and
   reject filters. Behaviour is made more consistent and the documention
   is updated accordingly.

 - The series "Switch zswap to object read/write APIs" from Yosry Ahmed
   updates zswap to the new object read/write APIs and thus permits the
   removal of some legacy code from zpool and zsmalloc.

 - The series "Some trivial cleanups for shmem" from Baolin Wang does as
   it claims.

 - The series "fs/dax: Fix ZONE_DEVICE page reference counts" from
   Alistair Popple regularizes the weird ZONE_DEVICE page refcount
   handling in DAX, permittig the removal of a number of special-case
   checks.

 - The series "refactor mremap and fix bug" from Lorenzo Stoakes is a
   preparatoty refactoring and cleanup of the mremap() code.

 - The series "mm: MM owner tracking for large folios (!hugetlb) +
   CONFIG_NO_PAGE_MAPCOUNT" from David Hildenbrand reworks the manner in
   which we determine whether a large folio is known to be mapped
   exclusively into a single MM.

 - The series "mm/damon: add sysfs dirs for managing DAMOS filters based
   on handling layers" from SeongJae Park adds a couple of new sysfs
   directories to ease the management of DAMON/DAMOS filters.

 - The series "arch, mm: reduce code duplication in mem_init()" from
   Mike Rapoport consolidates many per-arch implementations of
   mem_init() into code generic code, where that is practical.

 - The series "mm/damon/sysfs: commit parameters online via
   damon_call()" from SeongJae Park continues the cleaning up of sysfs
   access to DAMON internal data.

 - The series "mm: page_ext: Introduce new iteration API" from Luiz
   Capitulino reworks the page_ext initialization to fix a boot-time
   crash which was observed with an unusual combination of compile and
   cmdline options.

 - The series "Buddy allocator like (or non-uniform) folio split" from
   Zi Yan reworks the code to split a folio into smaller folios. The
   main benefit is lessened memory consumption: fewer post-split folios
   are generated.

 - The series "Minimize xa_node allocation during xarry split" from Zi
   Yan reduces the number of xarray xa_nodes which are generated during
   an xarray split.

 - The series "drivers/base/memory: Two cleanups" from Gavin Shan
   performs some maintenance work on the drivers/base/memory code.

 - The series "Add tracepoints for lowmem reserves, watermarks and
   totalreserve_pages" from Martin Liu adds some more tracepoints to the
   page allocator code.

af6bfcd169 s390/mm: Dump fault info in case of low address protection fault
In case of an unexpected low address protection fault in user mode dump
fault info to make debugging a bit easier. At least the teid is valid,
while dumping the page table is racy, since no lock is held.
But it might still give some hints.

b9be1bee2f s390/asm-offsets: Remove ASM_OFFSETS_C
Remove ASM_OFFSETS_C which is used as guard in thread_info.h to decide if
asm-offsets can be included or not.

There is no reason to include asm-offsets.h in thread_info.h anymore.
Remove the define and the not needed include. Explicitly include
asm-offsets.h in all header files which require it, and where it used
to be included implicitly via thread_info.h.

This reduces header dependencies.

 - Add sorting of mcount locations at build time

 - Rework uaccess functions with C exception handling to shorten inline
   assembly size and enable full inlining. This yields near-optimal code
   for small constant copies with a ~40kb kernel size increase

 - Add support for a configurable STRICT_MM_TYPECHECKS which allows to
   generate better code, but also allows to have type checking for debug
   builds

 - Optimize get_lowcore() for common callers with alternatives that
   nearly revert to the pre-relocated lowcore code, while also slightly
   reducing syscall entry and exit time

 - Convert MACHINE_HAS_* checks for single facility tests into cpu_has_*
   style macros that call test_facility(), and for features with
   additional conditions, add a new ALT_TYPE_FEATURE alternative to
   provide a static branch via alternative patching. Also, move machine
   feature detection to the decompressor for early patching and add
   debugging functionality to easily show which alternatives are patched

 - Add exception table support to early boot / startup code to get rid
   of the open coded exception handling

 - Use asm_inline for all inline assemblies with EX_TABLE or ALTERNATIVE
   to ensure correct inlining and unrolling decisions

 - Remove 2k page table leftovers now that s390 has been switched to
   always allocate 4k page tables

 - Split kfence pool into 4k mappings in arch_kfence_init_pool() and
   remove the architecture-specific kfence_split_mapping()

 - Use READ_ONCE_NOCHECK() in regs_get_kernel_stack_nth() to silence
   spurious KASAN warnings from opportunistic ftrace argument tracing

 - Force __atomic_add_const() variants on s390 to always return void,
   ensuring compile errors for improper usage

   mismatched semantics and lack of known users, relying on asm-generic

 - Signal eventfd in vfio-ap to notify userspace when the guest AP
   configuration changes, including during mdev removal

0dafe9968a s390: Use inline qualifier for all EX_TABLE and ALTERNATIVE inline assemblies
Use asm_inline for all inline assemblies which make use of the EX_TABLE or
ALTERNATIVE macros.

These macros expand to many lines and the compiler assumes the number of
lines within an inline assembly is the same as the number of instructions
within an inline assembly. This has an effect on inlining and loop
unrolling decisions.

In order to avoid incorrect assumptions use asm_inline, which tells the
compiler that an inline assembly has the smallest possible size.

In order to avoid confusion when asm_inline should be used or not, since a
couple of inline assemblies are quite large: the rule is to always use
asm_inline whenever the EX_TABLE or ALTERNATIVE macro is used. In specific
cases there may be reasons to not follow this guideline, but that should
be documented with the corresponding code.

Using the inline qualifier everywhere has only a small effect on the kernel
image size:

add/remove: 0/10 grow/shrink: 19/8 up/down: 1492/-1858 (-366)

The only location where this seems to matter is load_unaligned_zeropad()
from word-at-a-time.h where the compiler inlines more functions within the
dcache code, which is indeed code where performance matters.

caa3cd5ccd s390/kfence: Split kfence pool into 4k mappings in arch_kfence_init_pool()
Since commit d08d4e7cd6 ("s390/mm: use full 4KB page for 2KB PTE"),
there is no longer any reason to avoid splitting the kfence pool into
4k mappings in arch_kfence_init_pool(). Remove the architecture-specific
kfence_split_mapping().

46ba4d0bfc s390/sysctl: Remove "vm/allocate_pgste" sysctl
Remove the not needed "vm/allocate_pgste" sysctl. It has no effect
anymore. However this is a user space visible change. It shouldn't cause
any problems, however if it does this needs to be partially reverted.

Note that some distributions set
vm/allocate_pgste=1

in one of the various sysctl configuration files. Besides a warning about
the (now) non-existent procfs file this doesn't cause any problems.

174cb82a57 s390: Remove 2k vs 4k page table leftovers
Since commit d08d4e7cd6 ("s390/mm: use full 4KB page for 2KB PTE") always
4k page tables are allocated, however there is still some (now) obsolete
code left which deals with switching from 2k to 4k page tables for qemu/kvm
processes.

20de8f8d31 s390: Move s390 sysctls into their own file under arch/s390
Move s390 sysctls (spin_retry and userprocess_debug) into their own
files under arch/s390. Create two new sysctl tables
(2390_{fault,spin}_sysctl_table) which will be initialized with
arch_initcall placing them after their original place in proc_root_init.

This is part of a greater effort to move ctl tables into their
respective subsystems which will reduce the merge conflicts in
kernel/sysctl.c.

8afa901c14 arch, mm: make releasing of memory to page allocator more explicit
The point where the memory is released from memblock to the buddy
allocator is hidden inside arch-specific mem_init()s and the call to
memblock_free_all() is needlessly duplicated in every artiste cure and
after introduction of arch_mm_preinit() hook, mem_init() implementation on
many architecture only contains the call to memblock_free_all().

Pull memblock_free_all() call into mm_core_init() and drop mem_init() on
relevant architectures to make it more explicit where the free memory is
released from memblock to the buddy allocator and to reduce code
duplication in architecture specific code.

0d98484ee3 arch, mm: introduce arch_mm_preinit
Currently, implementation of mem_init() in every architecture consists of
one or more of the following:

* initializations that must run before page allocator is active, for
  instance swiotlb_init()
* a call to memblock_free_all() to release all the memory to the buddy
  allocator
* initializations that must run after page allocator is ready and there is
  no arch-specific hook other than mem_init() for that, like for example
  register_page_bootmem_info() in x86 and sparc64 or simple setting of
  mem_init_done = 1 in several architectures
* a bunch of semi-related stuff that apparently had no better place to
  live, for example a ton of BUILD_BUG_ON()s in parisc.

Introduce arch_mm_preinit() that will be the first thing called from
mm_core_init(). On architectures that have initializations that must happen
before the page allocator is ready, move those into arch_mm_preinit() along
with the code that does not depend on ordering with page allocator setup.

On several architectures this results in reduction of mem_init() to a
single call to memblock_free_all() that allows its consolidation next.

e120d1bc12 arch, mm: set high_memory in free_area_init()
high_memory defines upper bound on the directly mapped memory.  This bound
is defined by the beginning of ZONE_HIGHMEM when a system has high memory
and by the end of memory otherwise.

All this is known to generic memory management initialization code that
can set high_memory while initializing core mm structures.

Add a generic calculation of high_memory to free_area_init() and remove
per-architecture calculation except for the architectures that set and use
high_memory earlier than that.

8268af309d arch, mm: set max_mapnr when allocating memory map for FLATMEM
max_mapnr is essentially the size of the memory map for systems that use
FLATMEM. There is no reason to calculate it in each and every architecture
when it's anyway calculated in alloc_node_mem_map().

Drop setting of max_mapnr from architecture code and set it once in
alloc_node_mem_map().

While on it, move definition of mem_map and max_mapnr to mm/mm_init.c so
there won't be two copies for MMU and !MMU variants.

f9aad62200 mm: rename GENERIC_PTDUMP and PTDUMP_CORE
Platforms subscribe into generic ptdump implementation via GENERIC_PTDUMP.
But generic ptdump gets enabled via PTDUMP_CORE.  These configs
combination is confusing as they sound very similar and does not
differentiate between platform's feature subscription and feature
enablement for ptdump.  Rename the configs as ARCH_HAS_PTDUMP and PTDUMP
making it more clear and improve readability.

624ab90b7b mm/cma: introduce cma_intersects function
Now that CMA areas can have multiple physical ranges, code can't assume a
CMA struct represents a base_pfn plus a size, as returned from
cma_get_base.

Most cases are ok though, since they all explicitly refer to CMA areas
that were created using existing interfaces (cma_declare_contiguous_nid or
cma_init_reserved_mem), which guarantees they have just one physical
range.

An exception is the s390 code, which walks all CMA ranges to see if they
intersect with a range of memory that is about to be hotremoved.  So, in
the future, it might run in to multi-range areas.  To keep this check
working, define a cma_intersects function.  This just checks if a physaddr
range intersects any of the ranges.  Use it in the s390 check.

structures may be returned in registers [1] made me again aware that this
is not true for s390 where the ABI defines that structures are returned in
a return value buffer allocated by the caller. This was also mentioned by
Alexander Gordeev a couple of weeks ago.

In theory the -freg-struct-return compiler flag would allow to return small
structures in registers, however that has not been implemented for
s390. Juergen Christ did an experimental gcc implementation which shows the
benefit of such a change (bloat-o-meter):

add/remove: 3/2 grow/shrink: 12/441 up/down: 740/-7182 (-6442)

This result is not very impressive, and doesn't seem to justify a new ABI
for the kernel.

However there is still the existing STRICT_MM_TYPECHECKS which can be used
to change some mm types from structures to simple scalar types. Changing
the mm types results in:

add/remove: 2/8 grow/shrink: 25/116 up/down: 3902/-6204 (-2302)

Which is already a third of the possible savings which would be the result
of the described ABI change.

Therefore add support for a configurable STRICT_MM_TYPECHECKS which allows
to generate better code, but also allows to have type checking for debug
builds."

c94bff63e4 s390: Remove ioremap_wt() and pgprot_writethrough()
It turns out that while s390 architecture calls its memory-I/O mapping
variants write-through and write-back the implementation of ioremap_wt()
and pgprot_writethrough() does not match Linux notion of ioremap_wt().

In particular Linux expects ioremap_wt() to be weaker still than
ioremap_wc(), allowing not just gathering and re-ordering but also reads
to be served from cache. Instead s390's implementation is equivalent to
normal ioremap() while its ioremap_wc() allows re-ordering.

Note that there are no known users of ioremap_wt() on s390 and the
resulting behavior is in line with asm-generic defining ioremap_wt() as
ioremap(), if undefined, so no breakage is expected.

As s390 does not have a mapping type matching the Linux notion of
ioremap_wt() and pgprot_writethrough(), simply drop them and rely on the
asm-generic fallbacks instead.

Use static branch(es) to implement and use machine_has_tlb_guest()
instead of a runtime check via MACHINE_HAS_TLB_GUEST.

Also add sclp_early_detect_machine_features() in order to allow for
feature detection from the decompressor.

c488f5187a s390/uaccess: Shorten raw_copy_from_user() / raw_copy_to_user() inline assemblies
Add specific exception handler for copy_to_user() / copy_from_user()
mvcos fault handling, which allows to shorten the inline assemblies to
three instructions.

On fault the exception handler adjusts the length used by the mvcos
instruction in a way that the instruction completes with condition code
zero, indicating the number of bytes copied with the input/output operand
'size'. This allows to calculate and return the number of bytes not copied,
if any, like required.

Loop and return value handling is changed to C so that the compiler may
optimize the code.

02410ac72a mm: hugetlb: Add huge page size param to huge_ptep_get_and_clear()
In order to fix a bug, arm64 needs to be told the size of the huge page
for which the huge_pte is being cleared in huge_ptep_get_and_clear().
Provide for this by adding an `unsigned long sz` parameter to the
function. This follows the same pattern as huge_pte_clear() and
set_huge_pte_at().

This commit makes the required interface modifications to the core mm as
well as all arches that implement this function (arm64, loongarch, mips,
parisc, powerpc, riscv, s390, sparc). The actual arm64 bug will be fixed
in a separate commit.

84b7387692 KVM: s390: remove the last user of page->index
Shadow page tables use page->index to keep the g2 address of the guest
page table being shadowed.

Instead of keeping the information in page->index, split the address
and smear it over the 16-bit softbits areas of 4 PGSTEs.

This removes the last s390 user of page->index.

ef0c8ef848 KVM: s390: stop using lists to keep track of used dat tables
Until now, every dat table allocated to map a guest was put in a
linked list. The page->lru field of struct page was used to keep track
of which pages were being used, and when the gmap is torn down, the
list was walked and all pages freed.

This patch gets rid of the usage of page->lru. Page tables are now
freed by recursively walking the dat table tree.

Since s390_unlist_old_asce() becomes useless now, remove it.

The host_to_guest radix tree will now map userspace addresses to guest
addresses, instead of userspace addresses to segment tables.

When segment tables and page tables are needed, they are found using an
additional gmap_table_walk().

This gets rid of all usage of page->index for non-shadow gmaps.

   inadvertently prevented KASAN shadow mappings from using large pages.
   Restore large page mappings for KASAN shadows

 - Add decompressor routine physmem_alloc() that may fail, unlike
   physmem_alloc_or_die(). This allows callers to implement fallback
   paths

 - Allow falling back from large pages to smaller pages (1MB or 4KB) if
   the allocation of 2GB pages in the decompressor can not be fulfilled

 - Add to the decompressor boot print support of "%%" format string,
   width and padding hadnling, length modifiers and decimal conversion
   specifiers

 - Add to the decompressor message severity levels similar to kernel
   ones. Support command-line options that control console output
   verbosity

 - Replaces boot_printk() calls with appropriate loglevel- specific
   helpers such as boot_emerg(), boot_warn(), and boot_debug().

 - Collect all boot messages into a ring buffer independent of the
   current log level. This is particularly useful for early crash
   analysis

 - If 'earlyprintk' command line parameter is not specified, store
   decompressor boot messages in a ring buffer to be printed later by
   the kernel, once the console driver is registered

 - Add 'bootdebug' command line parameter to enable printing of
   decompressor debug messages when needed. That parameters allows
   message suppressing and filtering

 - Dump boot messages on a decompressor crash, but only if 'bootdebug'
   command line parameter is enabled

 - When CONFIG_PRINTK_TIME is enabled, add timestamps to boot messages
   in the same format as regular printk()

 - Dump physical memory tracking information on boot: online ranges,
   reserved areas and vmem allocations

 - Dump virtual memory layout and randomization details

 - Improve decompression error reporting and dump the message ring
   buffer in case the boot failed and system halted

 - Add an exception handler which handles exceptions when FPU control
   register is attempted to be set to an invalid value. Remove '.fixup'
   section as result of this change

 - Use 'A', 'O', and 'R' inline assembly format flags, which allows
   recent Clang compilers to generate better FPU code

 - Rework uaccess code so it reads better and generates more efficient
   code

 - Cleanup futex inline assembly code

 - Disable KMSAN instrumention for futex inline assemblies, which
   contain dereferenced user pointers. Otherwise, shadows for the user
   pointers would be accessed

 - PFs which are not initially configured but in standby create only a
   single-function PCI domain. If they are configured later on, sibling
   PFs and their child VFs will not be added to their PCI domain
   breaking SR-IOV expectations.

   Fix that by allowing initially configured but in standby PFs create
   multi-function PCI domains

 - Add '-std=gnu11' to decompressor and purgatory CFLAGS to avoid
   compile errors caused by kernel's own definitions of 'bool', 'false',
   and 'true' conflicting with the C23 reserved keywords

 - Fix sclp subsystem failure when a sclp console is not present

 - Fix misuse of non-NULL terminated strings in vmlogrdr driver

 - Various other small improvements, cleanups and fixes

1751f872cc treewide: const qualify ctl_tables where applicable
Add the const qualifier to all the ctl_tables in the tree except for
watchdog_hardlockup_sysctl, memory_allocation_profiling_sysctls,
loadpin_sysctl_table and the ones calling register_net_sysctl (./net,
drivers/inifiniband dirs). These are special cases as they use a
registration function with a non-const qualified ctl_table argument or
modify the arrays before passing them on to the registration function.

Constifying ctl_table structs will prevent the modification of
proc_handler function pointers as the arrays would reside in .rodata.
This is made possible after commit 78eb4ea25c ("sysctl: treewide:
constify the ctl_table argument of proc_handlers") constified all the
proc_handlers.
